Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by pain throughout the body with pain at specific tender points. In addition, it may affect other systems of the body and affect the ability to function on a daily basis. Treatment for fibromyalgia generally consists of both pharmacological and nonpharmacological methods. The staff of AIM Physical Therapy can provide nonpharmacological, conservative treatment to help patients with fibromyalgia reduce their pain, decrease muscle tension, increase physical function, and complete activities of daily living. A number of studies have touted the benefits of physical therapy in reducing patient pain and improving quality of life. The staff of AIM Physical Therapy are able to develop an individually tailored treatment program which includes use of modalities, manual therapy, massage, stretching, strengthening and aerobic exercise. We have found use of gentle techniques such as Primal Reflex Release and Frequency Specific Microcurrent to be beneficial and an option most patients have not had access to. In addition, our staff can offer recommendations to make activities of daily living easier and offer tips with coping skills.
Modalities:
Use of these modalities can reduce pain, decrease inflammation, and increase tissue extensibility. Our staff has the ability to utilize a number of modality options including Frequency Specific Microcurrent, ultrasound, iontophoresis, low level laser therapy, or the application of heat or cold.
Manual Therapy:
Use of manual therapy and massage techniques can decrease the myofacial trigger points that often accompany the fibromyalgia condition. We have found use of Primal Reflex Release Techniques to be a very effective and gentle method of relieving pain this type of condition.
Flexibility Training:
Can be used to increase the motion of the tissues thereby making mobility easier.
Movement Therapy:
Recent studies have shown that gentle exercise can improve cardiovascular fitness, reduce tender point pain, and allow patient to continue their independence.
ADL Training:
The staff of AIM Physical Therapy is able to offer recommendations to make activities of daily living easier. This may include instruction on joint protection techniques, use of assistive devices to make tasks easier, or instruction on coping techniques for difficult days.
